Angels we have Heard on High

Last Sunday night I asked Dustin if he thought we could call the neighbors and have everybody go outside lining the streets of our neighborhood to hold hands and sing "Fahoo fores dahoo dores. Welcome Christmas, Come our way."  (From the Grinch who stole Christmas)  He thought I was nuts but agreed to my 2nd best idea of inviting some friends to jump on the back of a trailer and sing as we drive down the neighborhood.  So I sent out an email and to his suprise we ended up with 8 families to sing with.

We had a great time!

We had the Hansens, Pettingills, Laytons, Paynes, Sorensens, Browns, Taylors & US!  My good parents were our drivers/babysitters and let us use their truck and trailer.  We appreciated them so much and wouldn't have been able to do it without them.

Even Mr. Grinch himself had a little swelling going on in that heart that was 2 sizes too small. :)  See that smile.

Alissa and Molly stayed in the car with grandma and grandpa most of the time to stay warm.  By the time we got back to the house about 10 other kids had climbed through the back window of the truck and were having a grand ol' time with grandma and grandpa. :)

Mike was the runner and rang doorbells for us so we could have somebody to sing to.
When we got back to my house we had hot chocolate and doughnuts thanks to good friends who provided them. What a great night!

Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la la la la la.

Gray

In case I ever wonder, it was when I turned 28 that my hair turned gray.  Is that crazy or what?  Time to color those crazy things.

A new perspective..

Last Sunday, December 4th our phone rang with news of Greg's death.  We were in shock.  Greg is only 26 years old.  He is the husband of Dustin's niece Julie and the father of 3 beautiful kids and 1 on the way.  He was the coach of the basketball team at Pocatello High school.  He had been working so hard to get through school to achieve this goal and had just recently achieved it.

Greg had a headache and back ache throughout the past week.  The doctors thought he had a sinus infection and on Sunday he decided to stay home from church to rest.  When Julie came home from teaching Relief Society she found him unconscious.  He never awoke.

All week long I have had such a heavy heart and cannot help but put myself in the shoes of Julie.  She has been through so much in her life and now will be enduring a trial beyond comprehension for me.  Every day I look forward to the homecoming of my husband.  To help me feed the kids, to talk about the day, to do whatever.. just be with him.  I daily seek his approval and advice, I daily seek his love and compassion.  I cannot for a second imagine living without him.  As I thought about what I could do for Julie to help bear the burden I realize there is nothing that could compare to the life of my husband.  I don't want money, I don't want a vacation, I don't want the perfect house or perfect job... without having him by my side.

I hope and pray the Lord will help bear the burden of Greg's loss for her and the rest of the family.  I know that will be the only way to find solace.  I hope that I can remember my feelings this week and keep the perspective that we never know our day when the Lord will call us home.  I hope I can remember that there are many things that aren't worth being upset over.  People are way more important that any THING.  I am grateful that Julie and Greg can be an eternal family and that Dustin and I can be an eternal family with our sweet girls.  I will try to better live up to my temple covenants, to treat my family with more love and give time and energy to serving my Maker.

In loving memory of Greg Glenn.

Please pray for Julie and her little family.  Also, if you are interested in helping her family, you can make a donation at Wells Fargo or Pocatello Teachers Credit Union.

Way too much fun!

I'll be honest, I've been pretty bummed for winter to come.  I love being able to send the kids outside to play and watch them run around and not worrying about them watching way too much TV because there is so much to do outside.  So I made a winter bucket list.. we'll see how it goes, but so far it's lifted my spirits.

Here are some of the things we have been doing.  The kids wrote a letter to Santa.  Well, Ella wrote 2 letters from Santa one for Alissa and one for herself.  Alissa's says Dear Santa, I want a toy giraffe.  If you ask Alissa what she wants for Christmas she says a baby doll and a white kitty.  I think that is because those are a few of her favorite toys she plays with.
Ella's says Dear Santa, I want a baby brother.  When she first told me this I said, "Well that would I mean I would have to have him."  She said, "NO!  Just leave the window open and the pelican can bring it."  If only it were that easy I'd give her a baby brother for Christmas...maybe.  Anyway, I guess she asked my mom if she would have him and suggested to me that maybe Mrs. Claus would have him so we could have a boy.  When we went to tithing settlement the Bishop asked if there was anything else she wanted and she said, "nope."

The girls have had fun dressing up and playing outside in the tiny bit of snow we have.

I pulled them around the yard a few days ago.  They thought it was pretty cool.

Then I filled up a few bottles with water and food coloring and let them draw in the snow.  We did this a few years back with squirt bottles and colored our snow man.  It's always a hit with the kids.

Our good daddy took us for a little ride around our neighbor hood and out in the field behind the neighborhood.  We even got to walk on a train track.  The kids thought it was pretty neat and I was happy to be hanging out with the kids AND my cute hubby.
Before church the other day we took our own family photo.  The girls were all dressed in their festive dresses and their hair was curled.  I had to have a picture.  I love them so much!!
Believe it or not this was the first picture and everybody was looking.  I love it! :)

Gingerbread (Graham Cracker) Houses

Monday night we were lucky enough to have Family Home Evening with our friends, the Hansens.  We enjoyed a little Christmas lesson and then some serious candy house making.
Ella tasted her first cinnamon bear and didn't like it too much.

Molly loved every bit of everything there.

Alissa was pretty excited as well.

As always Dustin gets pretty serious about the construction of his
gingerbread house.  He and Mike started to compete a little.
We are grateful for good friends!!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

We got our tree assembled and ornaments hung...twice.  The first time we didn't/ I didn't make a very good effort and our poor tree looked pretty sad so we undecorated it and gave it another go.  The girls didn't mind.

I really don't like putting the tree together, I guess that's my problem.  I don't mind putting the ornaments on and making it look nice, but I'm burnt out by the time I get the dang thing to even stand up straight.  :)  So sad!  My mom and dad started a tradition with us as kids that every year we got a new ornament the day we put our tree up.  I loved it so I continued it with my kids.  My mom was way more clever and got us an ornament that reminded us of what we had done that year.  This little mouse's arm is broken off but she still reminds me of the middle school year when I was in home ec at and sewed an apron and learned to make stir fry and pretzels.

And tweety bird's head is missing but he reminds me of the years I took photography is high school and photographed for the yearbook.

I love how Ella sat staring at the finished project daydreaming.

This year a little elf showed up to visit and keep his eye on the kids until Christmas Eve.  Ella named him Smokey.  Every night he goes back to the North Pole and then shows up in the morning to keep another eye on the kids.

I'm not sure who is having more fun.  Me and dad or the kids. :)

One of my favorite decorations of all is my Fisher Price nativity.  Dustin's parents gave it to me last year and I LOVE IT!  The kids reassemble it almost every day and it makes me a little crazy, but then happy.
We are also going to start reading a Christmas story every night.  We are going to start next week.  The anticipation is making Ella nuts.  She is so excited to unwrap that first book.

And presents are starting to gather around the tree.  Thankfully none of the kids have touched them, however I did give them a pretty hefty threat if they did.  Told them the presents would go away if they did.

I know the festivities are only beginning, but it's nice to have that warm Christmas feeling in our home.  I just love this holiday!

Growing Pains

Every now and again when things slow down I start to notice how quickly time has gone and how old my kids are getting.  It makes me so excited to move onto new phases of life, but so sad to say goodbye to the last, younger phase.  Here is a little update.

Miss Ella is learning to be a bit more independent and a ton more helpful.  She is and always will be her sensitive sweet self.  She is good to compliment and notice when I need her, I seriously LOVE that about her.
I noticed this on the fridge a few mornings ago.  I had mentioned the night before that we were almost out of milk and croutons.  Thanks to Ella (without being asked) it made it to the actual grocery list.

Here is a recent laugh I had.  Every night she makes this little symbol at the bottom of her worksheet.  I never understood it and just shrugged it off.  So as I watched her make it a few nights ago I realized she was copying my initials. :)  I have to initial her homework sometimes and she was doing it for me.  he he.. I had to correct her on that small matter.

She is so smart and doing so great in school.  She got to be the "Student Teacher" a few weeks back and LOVED it.  For a whole week she got to sit in a desk next to the teacher, wear the lanyard around her neck, have a giant white board (vs. a small one) and other special privileges.  Her teacher has been terrific and has really been trying to push her even though she is ahead of the game.

I saw a girl with a shirt that said Mom's BFF Forever and I totally wanted it for Ella.  She is one of my Best Friends and I hope we can always be close.

Alissa is getting so much fun!  She is starting to love dress up and puzzles and I guess have a longer attention span is what it comes down to.  .She tells me she is Sleeping Beauty and wears around this pink dress most days now.

Even wore it to bed one night.

She loves to have "school" with mom and do her flash cards.  She has the alphabet sounds almost all down and recognizes a lot of the letters.  She knows colors and shapes and is just a little smartie.  She shows me a little attitude here and there and pops her hip out with her hand on it.  Wonder where she learned that??

Although she isn't causing as much mischief she still does find a little trouble here and there.  She loves to help me load and start the dishwasher and she poked the detergent gelcap just a bit too hard. See the blue on her forehead.  I made her stand there until I could get the camera cause I was laughing so hard.  Obviously she wasn't too amused.

She has been in this little phase of asking me to hold her all day.  I guess she is craving a little more attention.  I have been trying to take time to do a puzzle with her or make her some new play dough or something.  She misses Ella from the time she wakes up and Ella is gone until the minute Ella walks in the door.  If I let her out when Ella gets off the bus she will run as fast as she can all the way down to Ella's bus stop to greet her with a giant hug and throw her legs around Ella.  It's precious.

She and Molly are starting to play a little better together.  She still gets really frustrated because Molly is messy and clumsy and all those things that Ella used to get upset about with Alissa.  There are times that they are the best of friends.  Like lunch today when I find them giving each other kisses.

Molly is getting so big!  In the last few weeks she has picked up so many words.  Including:
ipod, draw, help, ah oh, poo, shoes, ya, bee bee (binki), dink (drink), jood job (good job), da do (thank you)

She likes to take her diaper off and sit on the toilet like her sisters.  Every once in a while she will go, but not that often.  This is how it started with Alissa though so I guess I will hope that in 6 months I will be done with diapers.  Wouldn't that be amazing!

She is starting to dress up a little bit with the bigger girls.  She likes to feel big.  I like her to feel big too because it make me laugh to watch her prance around.  She got her first haircut today.  I buzzed it with a 1"guard to even it all up.  Hopefully it starts growing in.  She takes after her mama.

She wants to feed herself these days and sit in the booster instead of the high chair.  OH MERCY!  I clean up so many messes these days.  Thank goodness for Shout spray or my laundry would be horrible.
She has her mom and dad wrapped, but especially her daddy.  When he walks in she is the first to greet him with a smiley, "HI!" and if she is not tied down in her booster she runs and gives him big hugs.  She is pretty much always happy and is just a really great baby.  She sleeps so well now that she has most of her teeth in and has been sleeping 8:30pm-9am the last few weeks.

Almost every night she likes to come lay by Dustin and I on the bed and wrestle or snuggle or do whatever just to stay awake and have a little attention.  I can't help but love every second of it.  It's so crazy how quickly time goes by.

Oh, I am so blessed.  So grateful to have these sweet girls in my life!!
It just doesn't get much better than this.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday

We had another fun Thanksgiving.  This year was spent at Dustin's brother Brian's house and I got to cook my 2nd ever turkey.  A 20 lb one this time.  He was HUGE!  However, my sister in law cooked a 27 lb turkey and another sis in law cooked a ham too.  That tells you how much we like to eat!  We had plenty of good food, tons of pie and lots of other good food.

Dustin has a Thanksgiving tradition of playing board games after eating and normally plays all night and into morning when he comes home at 4am for me to go black Friday shopping.  :)  This year black Friday shopping started at 10pm on Thanksgiving so he ended games early and they got together another night during the vacation to play.  It was very nice of him.

About 9:30pm my brother Cody, sister Heidi and mom and I all headed out to Walmart to score us some good deals.  We hit many other stores and didn't make it home until 6am!!  Thankfully my kids slept in until 9 that day and took a long nap.  Black Friday is so crazy!  I have so much crazy fun going with my siblings and mom.  We showed up right as Target was opening and tried to cram in line with all those who had been waiting there all evening.  I got seriously chewed out by some people and even shoved off the curb by one kind looking but very grumpy lady.  It makes me laugh.. what silly memories!
